> I recently attended a talk by Joe Latshaw on wintering nucs in polystyrene hives he buys out of Canada.
In my conversations with Joe I believe he buys his nucs from BetterBee, or at least did a couple years ago. I use the same nucs but my winters are a little colder and I don't need to cut the bottoms out of them. I use 5 over 5 but my top box is a wooden nuc [Mann Lake]. I do get some leakage between the boxes so in the winter I cover them on 3 sides with a cheap tarp, keeps the wind out and still allows moisture to escape - I use migratory covers with a 3/4" vent - flight hole. I have had very good success with this configuration.
