There was some confusion initially.
VDV-1 is now called DWV-B.
Ongus, who named it, demonstrated that it was only found in the mite's gut
lumen, not in mite tissue.
Only one recent study appears to support that it may replicate in varroa,
but only in the brain, which is surprising, since DWV replicates in many
tissues in other hosts.
Dr Eugene Ryabov recently demonstrated that DWV-A does not replicate in
mite tissue, although negative-strand RNA can be found in the mite's gut
lumen after it has fed on an infected bee.
In my mind, the jury's still out...
