Not meaningless but fits right in with the recommendations for cold
climates- 3 deeps guarantee no starvation. Two deeps or three mediums are
borderline.
Met a beekeeper this am who overwintered on one deep and three mediums and
his bees were in exceptional shape. Many in Maine overwinter on two deeps
and a super. I don't because it causes problems in the spring with brood in
the super. Not a major problem but it is easier to manage without it.
