A small scale commercial beekeeper (40+ hives) here in West Dorset, UK, has recently taken up instrumental insemination in order to improve his stock. He's surprised to find that about 40% of the drones are sterile! Is this normal/usual, or is it a local problem?
Could it be a reason why queens don't last nearly as long as they used to, having run out of sperm?
