This needs to be broken down to separate questions since honeybees do need
pollen to build combs, but

1. when in their lives do they need it?

2. is it needed in the actual comb building?

The answers so far say that they do need it so they can become able to make
wax and that occurs in their normal development, so yes that they need
pollen to make wax.

Question 2 is the real question and here there are opinions along with
observations . So are they able to build comb without needing pollen either
dietary of for construction or whatever.

It would seem that the answer to #1 is a definite yes while #2 is probably
not, based on the observations of many here.

Looking forward to any studies out there, especially if they separate the
questions.I did not find any.
