I have revisited my home turf many times over the years and if anything, there are fewer lawns and much more use of drought resistant ground covers including a variety of cacti and succulent species. But the chief source of nectar in So Cal is eucalyptus, plus a profusion of flower shrubs. Here's an aerial view of Encinitas, CA:
