"what has been reduced in the environment to reduce insects. If not pesticides...what?"
Hygiene is the root cause !
All farms control the flies, droneflies and beetles tenebrionidae (Alphitobius diaperinus) using since 1980 insect growth regulators (triflumuron for example).
Hypoderma lineatum and H. bovis are kept under control using once a year, an injection of ivermectine.
Organic farms also control flies (Musca domestica, Fannia canicularis for exemple) with the help of commercially available :
- Small wasp Muscidifurax raptorellus
- Fly larve Ophyra aenescens.
- Mite Macrocheles (several species are used)
As a consequence a lot less annoying flies inside our homes but also less swallows in the sky, and less food for worm eater birds.
all is linked together
