I've had pretty good luck using baggies to get a little extra feed into
colonies late in the season but don't generally leave them on all winter.
For emergency feed in late winter/early spring, I like fondant. It can be
purchased in 20kg blocks and pretty easily cut with a cheese wire and put
between sheets of wax paper. It's a lot less messy than dry sugar in the
hive and the bees seem to consumer it more readily.
