I'm in Los Angeles and I find the oil-tray device to be very useful (See link below to the Freeman Bottom Board). Not a 100% kill but it keeps the numbers down so I don't ever have hives crash from shb's. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet in this thread. Yes it's a bit expensive but for backyard keepers it's just the thing. Made in 8-frame and 10-frame sizes, also for nucs.
