The published paper says the simply adding uninnoculated birch sawdust to the sugar syrup produced the same reduction in viral titer as adding the cultured fungi (grown on sawdust). The paper spends a paragraph hypothesizing covert fungal colonization in the untreated sawdust (with detections via next-gen sequencing), but does cite two papers on anti-viral phytochemicals present in birch wood.
I'm skeptical.
