Dorr, since you asked for opinions and not scientifically verified facts,
my opinion is that they are making "funny honey". Bees do consume sugar,
whether syrup or granulated, when nectar is available. Some say that bees
will haul the granulated out as trash and that may be, but my bees will eat
up a sugar cake anytime of the year. Put some sugar on a spring nuc if you
want to prove them wrong.
