At Apimondia in Dublin in 2005 we were told that, in Italy, a GM crop (I've forgotten which plants) was grown which contained an anti-biotic resistant 'marker gene' which made it easier for the GM plants to be identified. Soon after that, the anti-biotic used by beekeepers against (I think) EFB ceased to be effective in that area as the resistant marker genes had epigenetically transferred to the bacteria.
Now it is in the news that anti-biotics are ceasing to be effective generally. Post hoc ergo propter hoc? What would Occam have said?
