That's the same sort of math they use to determine how much space passengers need on an airplane. Reduce leg space in the plane -- cram in more customers. Personally, I dread getting on a plane anymore.
I have documented the switch from one brood box to two or more. The reason was to get better colonies. Confining the queen to one story is great for stripping all the honey and putting 500 singles on a truck.
I have heard all sorts of practical reasons for managing bees that way, but nobody ever said it was better for the bees.
