I was intrigued particularly with the last pic where there are a zillion
hives, but what appears to be a total lack of bee forage.  Is someone
familiar with the area able to comment?

This is typical holding yard for bees in CA or many parts of Texas in
winter.   Yards are full of bees being fed.  It weird to go in them and see
no bees flying (darn few)  they quickly learn the scouts are finding nothing
and keep activity to a minimum.
