It's my understanding that the Nasonov gland (which produces at least 7 pheromones) is exposed by bees at the hive entrance who fan the volatile compounds into the air, as an orientation aid to incoming foragers. Similar action is employed to keep a swarm together and also orient swarm bees to a new nest site.
