Hello Everyone

Just listened to an interesting podcast on honey bee genetics. Paul Hurd from the Queen Mary University of London is speaking with the podcast host on the topic of honey bee queens and how they are actually the result of epigenetics because it's royal jelly that transforms them into a special cast. According to Hurd no other Hymenoptera does this to make queens. This can't help your beekeeping but if you're interested start the link below at minute 14.

"We use the honeybee (Apis mellifera) as a model organism to understand how nutrition interacts with the epigenome in order to orchestrate the development of three organisms from a single genome. This phenotypic polymorphism represents one of the most striking examples of developmental plasticity in any phylum."
