I simply set up a queenless, 4-frame nuc, with one good frame of stores, 3
frames of brood of all stages (eggs to capped larvae) and a queen cage
holder frame as pictured here: http://tinyurl.com/y7txlknr The frame I use
holds 42 California mini-cages. One has to watch the first week to make
sure the bees don't raise their own queen, the next 2 weeks are pretty much
"free", after which fresh brood frames can be swapped in if one needs to
bank queens that long. When swapping in fresh brood frames, the same
caution is warranted to watch for attempts to raise a new queen, otherwise
the setup can keep queens banked for months. Whether one should bank
queens for months is another topic.
Aaron Morris - thinking a queen in the bank is worth 2 in the bush!
