Bees and soccer don't mix: http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/7,114871,20261043,spieszyl-sie-bo-chcial-obejrzec-mecz-polski-efekt-pod-slupskiem.html#NiePrzeg. In short, a farmer in Poland wanted to catch the Poland vs. North Ireland game and instead of waiting until sunset to apply a pesticide to a blooming rape field, decided to do it in the afternoon killing the local bee populations.

The last sentence of the article gives some hope: "Now both the field owner and the farmer will have to cover the loss. How large? We won't know until the experts finish their analysis." (My translation)

In view of the news from the UK, it's almost a forgotten aspect of the European Union that it has attempted to harmonize regulations across all member countries, including pesticide applications and that not all regulations are bad or onerous. Well, unless you're a thoughtless soccer fan, :-(

That said, go Poland! They've never gotten that far in the Euro...
