"By doing drone trapping, the levels can be maintained throughout
the summer, but it all falls apart in August."
Do you think this be due to a change in brooding behavior? Some of my bees start to fill drone brood comb with pollen and nectar in August...they don't want drones anymore. I think that is an excellent behavior and helps me to identify a potentially locally-hardy strain...they have the sense to know the "good times" are winding down. I keep an eye on such hives...those could be my hardy queens!
