I think this is correct. There may be some genetically based behavioral factors but they aren't translating to colony survival. I think this is why Tom is experimenting with hive configurations.
It appears that long term survival may be tied to swarming, smaller colonies, and not being managed for production. Also, isolation could be the most significant variable.
