IMHO, as well as that of Marla Spivak, Dennis vanEngelsdorp, and most other major varroa researchers, the "mite bomb" concept is well substantiated by experimental evidence, as well as practical experience.
I posted in September results of 200+ alcohol washes taken over a few days in my own operation. The data clearly show how a small percentage of colonies can have major impact upon the varroa levels of the rest of the operation.
