SPRING IS ARRIVING EARLY ACROSS THE SOUTH
Get your flip-flops and shorts out because spring is arriving very early this year . . . at least 2-3 weeks early across almost the entire Southeast, from San Antonio to Atlanta to Washington, D.C. This unusually early spring is likely to keep rolling north, already bringing surprising signs of spring to portions of the central Midwest and northeastern states.
The rapid spread of spring continues up the country, with Midwest states 3-4 weeks ahead of a long-term average. Indianapolis and Pittsburgh are 30 days early. Subsequent frosts could reset plant activity.
According to the USA-NPN's Spring Indices, spring is arriving 20 days earlier than a long-term average (1981-2010) in much of the South and mid-Atlantic. The Extended Spring Indicesare models that predict the onset of early spring plants across the United States. You can see these maps as well as maps of Accumulated Growing Degree Days (AGDD) on the USA-NPN's Phenology Visualization Tool.
