Greetings PLB et al,

right on! except this time !
perhaps where you are but the eastern part of Ontario is poor period.
especially here in Niagara Region and neighbouring areas
many agree that the mite count is low, yes treatment is of the order

just a glimpse into this area
partial frames filled and capped or not capped at all
or in certain ones totally capped but that was early on.

in two chamber hives there exists empty comb

personally I started pulling boxes late July and some in August
along with outer empty frames in others leaving as few as 5 or 6,
and they were as I described above.
yes there was the odd hive out of about 50 that was the regular performer
but amongst those the amount of brood was tremendous and decision was made
to leave the full shallow on on certain ones.

yes I did extract some honey, a some didn't even turn on the extractor

on a last note,
had a newbie show up,
he caught a swarm and wanted to continue
it turned into a going concern in two chambers
but then he put on a honey super and I advised against because of the
situation out there.
that was ignored so I walked away.
There's going to be many newbies out there with starved/dead hives in the
spring
and the Gurus at the bee associations are going to advise that it was
pesticides.
