Hi Deborah,
Can you give a little more background?
Where do you (your bees) live? It's winter where I am and it's unusual
for bees to abscond at this time. It's too cold to fly anywhere among
other things.
As a rule, bees abscond because they are VERY stressed where they are.
Stressors can include varroa, tracheal mites, constant agitation, drought,
fire, and ants. If you just installed a package, the bees are in a sort of
swarm mode and may have viewed your accommodations as a mere stop on their
journey elsewhere.
