Gene,
You are close. If the tractor is diesel it most likely will use 12, 24 or even a 48 volt system. The big heavy duty diesel equipment needs it.
I use an old Ford 671 4 cylinder tractor with 3 point hitch and PTO (it is as old or older than me) which runs on 6 volts.
Some of the old farm tractors are 6 volt and most of the lawn equipment as you stated is 6 vdc as well. Wish it was 12 volt, but it is not. Some of the really old equipment has a positive ground instead of a negative ground. Sparks fly on that equipment if you do not pay attention when connecting the battery or when you go to charge it or jump it.
I was thinking about getting one of those small gasoline powered portable generators which you can purchase for less than $100 (usually around $90) at a local Harbor Freight company. It is very small and can be carried with one hand (some people use them for camp sites) and they produce typically 800 to 900 watts VAC. Most also have a 12vdc plug and some even now have a vdc USB port you can plug your cell phone or tablet in to charge it.
