I have no reason to doubt that some plant products, when burned, could
stupefy bees.

On the other hand, the materials that I use (pine straw, punky wood, wood
pellets, etc) do not appear to have any noticeable stupefying effect on the
Italian-type honey bees that I keep.  With light smoking, the queen often
continues to lay eggs, and other than distracting the guard bees from my
presence, and perhaps some honey gorging by young workers, the bees
continue to function apparently normally.
