Sucrose was the best overwintering feed with HFCS second and honey third, for the reason you noted. It is the ash content that determined the best feed, with low ash the best since that means fewer cleansing flights.

There are several discussions in the archives, but they can get confusing since honey is the best food overall, but not for overwintering, which is the issue.



In this line of discussion,  I have been wintering on HFCS for a while and like it.   But a question came up Friday,  which I am not sure of the answer to.  
Normally we feed HFCS 55  Which is 55 % fructose and roughly 42% glucose,    But a local Bakery is selling HFCS 42 at 8 cents a pound cheaper (and less driving)

HFCS 42 being 42% Fructose and 55% glucose

What I am wondering since its still 97% carbs/sugars  what is the real differences for bees??
