All datasets contain "noise".
The noise in the cause can have an impact on the effect but the noise in the
effect cannot sway the cause.
The "effect" dataset noise will be more complex than the "cause" dataset
noise.

This is not a job for a spreadsheet macro, but the authors promise to
release the Matlab code they used.
There's a lot more use for this sort of thing in physics than in natural
sciences, but there are many uses to which we can put this little trick.
