Presence/absence (or detection vs. non detection) to define risk by viruses in honey bee colonies (and perhaps in other social insects) and for regulatory actions may be an incorrect application of experiences in veterinary and medical practices. Somehow honey bees despite the presence of viruses maintain the titres in individuals and in colonies low. Epidemics appear to be rare, and often connected with some other "stressor" or vector.
