Thanks Peter for this info. Though it might be applicable to Guelph region, Ontario it will not be applicable every where and every year. Guelph is like upstate NY too much golden rod that becomes a good source of pollen the fall. In Prairie areas where is not too many sources of natural pollen in the fall. we found when it is dry summer, it will affect the pollen quality and winter bees will suffer. It can lead to higher winter kill. Therefore, a beekeeper must adjust for this deficiency and feed pollen supplement in the fall.
Once again it isn't every year. Only when there is drought and sources and quality of pollen are compromised.
