With all due respect, I totally disagree with this theory.....Had several like you describe, and they stayed stable.
A question arises here could you/ would you be willing to test that theory??
I admit I have no real thoughts on how, other than take say 3 good and one bad and isolate them, then remove the queen maybe???
I would bet that you would see no noticible increase in the low count hives, even placed on the same pallet.
