Back in the 90's the idea going around here was to use culled tobacco
leaf to drop varroa mites(we used to have a tobacco growing area along
the north shore of Lake Erie). It really worked but I think it was
hard on the bees, and the beekeeper had to be very careful not to be
down wind of the smoker. I still have most of the bag that I got back
then, and sometimes drop a small amount into the smoker to work the
occasional grumpy hive.
