There seems to be some confusion on the concepts of running singles. Singles are not manged as smaller or inferior hives. They are managed to control broodnest only. AS those of us who are good with math know the queen can almost never excedd 9/10 frames solid with brood. so the point is to simply control which frames those are. Instead of the typical 2/3 frames chimned up the middle with honey on the outside, shes pushed down, which typically means wall to wal brood.
Its not about "small" hives as most will run 5/6 supers full on top the single. so total hive height is about the same, same with bee population. noting small about it.
