Regarding fume boards and vapors, Butyric acid is listed by the FDA as a synthetic flavoring substance that is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Same goes for benzaldehyde. Formic acid, acetic acid, etc. are found naturally in honey. All of these tend to evaporate thoroughly and I feel comfortable recommending them. Phenol is no longer in general use though I know that some beekeepers still use it for driving bees from the supers. At present, the only chemical I use on my hives is formic acid.
