Pete,  I favor inner covers with a 3 inch wide opening in them  to act as an upper entrance.  I can send pic privately if anyone likes(haven't got the hang of posting them here)

But to your point on the Beemax hives  I use painters drop canvas.  Our local walmart sells a piece that’s does six hives for about 3.00.
