Hello Peter; The incursion of the small hive beetle (SHB) in 2005 was from Australia. Some imported bee packages from Australia had SHB. We located all packages in Alberta and treated them with corrugated traps with Checkmite strips. Then we followed up inspection for 2 years and we did not find any beetles.
There are occasional incursions from Up state NY at very low levels into Quebec in recent years. However Quebec took action eradication and monitoring. In 2010 the SHB was found South Western Ontario. Ontario Government placed a quarantine and encourage beekeepers to control SHB and manage bees within the quarantined area. Map can be found at the following link. http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/food/inspection/bees/quarantine_area.png
This year we had several reports of new incursions from up state NY to Niagara region in Ontario, several findings in British Columbia from Washington state and one incursion in Quebec. Recent survey showed that the SHB was not found in the rest of the provinces. Actions are under discussions.
Now you are up to date.
Regards
Medhat
