Bill McClymont is credited with the coining of the term "sustainable agriculture." Professor R. A. Leng described McClymont thus:
His vision was of a self-sustaining, soil and livestock agriculture based on ecological principles, where these principles were affected by social, political and international events. His vision was never static and it evolved with changing world conditions.
