The critiques of "surveys" here on Bee-L correlate strongly to a lack of any
effort to understand the sophisticated statistical methods that can be used
in survey analysis.
I already quoted Katie Lee, of BIP, who pointed out the shortcomings of the BIP surveys. There is a long article in this week's New Yorker which lists the many failures of surveys and polling in general.
You refer to "sophisticated statistical methods that can be used in survey analysis." This fails to acknowledge the fact that Garbage In, Garbage Out. No amount of post processing can turn gravel into gold.
