Actually, they used diluted honey, but called it sugar.
The bee lab had no budget for sugar, and if they sold the honey the lab
produced, the funds went into general revenue, not lab operation.
I seriously doubt any of those colonies wintered successfully after that
abuse, but in those days replacement packages from California were cheap
($6?) and the practice in the Peace was to kill off colonies in fall and
buy new bees in spring.
Never believe anything you read.
