>I have trouble with the term "locally adapted". Don't we really mean 
"locally compatible"? If I have 3 hives: A, B and C, and A and C die, 
then perhaps B is "compatible" with my area while A and C weren't, but I 
don't seriously think that the bees in hive B have "adapted".

This is a long term thing that requires detailed record keeping over many
years.  Then you begin to see lines that survive, are good tempered and
produce consistently good crops.  It is no quick fix.
