I suggest the foundation of any reading list for the informed beekeeper is 'Langstroth on the Hive and the Honey-Bee' by L L Langstroth, 1853 (available in reprint).
Robin –
I took your advice and went back and reread Chapter VII or Lanstroth’s 1853 book. It is available online from the Cornell library. (http://bees.library.cornell.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=bees&cc=bees&type=simple&rgn=book+author&q1=langstroth&cite1=&cite1restrict=article+author&cite2=&cite2restrict=article+author&Submit=Search)
It is interesting that our modern “insights” are not greatly different from Langstroth’s. As interesting as this is to me, I think my beginning beekeeping friends need something a bit more practical. I think your are right that this is good reading for those who would fancy themselves “informed” beekeepers.
