> Consumers demand a certain lack of regulation for products that they wish

Consumers drive the market Todd. Consumers wish to be able to buy
household cleaners, driveway detergents, solvents, guns, automobiles,
batteries, and many other things that are harmful to the environment. In
the U.S. they tolerate a certain amount of regulation, but not too much.
In the U.S. the consumer demands cheap, cosmetically-perfect food, and the
growers and pesticide companies respond appropriately. The consumer looks
the other way. That consumer, by their buying habits, could change the
market overnight. We could be 100% organic agriculture in a couple of
years if the consumer demanded such and was willing to pay the additional
cost, and if we were willing to eat less (and less meat).
However, I doubt that is going to happen any time soon.
