Common practice in UK used to supply bees with salty water naturally. Bees would prefer to take water from off cowpats or runoff from manure stacks. I noticed that rotting leaves in a shallow rut were also attractive.
The countryside is too tidy nowadays. I put out shallow trays filled with pebbles - and at least some composty soil.
Luckily we liked a tasty honey here. :)
