Funny, Pete. I'm currently in Canada, and was just mentioning this fact to
my host. In my own operation in mild winter California, I always planned
to combine down my hive numbers by a third each fall in preparation for
almond pollination, even before varroa.
The easiest way to reduce winter losses is to take them in the fall.
