One factor might be that the colonies that cope with the mite, are
resistant to disease, are good foragers and winter efficiently are
likely also to be better at producing drones and thus pass on their
helpful genes. Of course, they are hindered by their keepers who may
plunder their stores, place them too close to neighbours, use worker
cell foundation and cull drone comb.
