A resident stable owner has contacted me several times for suggestions
as to how to keep her horses water supply free from thirsty bees falling
in and drowning.
I have made several suggestions over the years such as a wet hessian
sack over the edge so the bees can suck and providing alternative
buckets of water that bees can access.
However none of these have apparently been effective and with summer
almost here (down under), she is pleading for workable suggestions. The
horses require 12 gallons fresh water daily and continually return to
the trough with a water float control but the bees are always there.
She is surrounded by scrub with perhaps 50 feral hives within 2 miles so
it is not a matter of contacting apiarists with nearby sites.
Any success stories of co-habiting horses and bees would be appreciated.
