> Breeding programs will not be successful
This is the conclusion that was reached independently by Dave de Jong of Brazil and Mike Allsopp of South Africa. They both stated unequivocally that trying to breed mite resistance in European bees is bound to fail. Whereas, feral bees from both these regions as well as the southern USA already have mite defenses, which no doubt could be enhanced. Rather than try to breed resistant traits into European bees, the quest would be to try to develop manageable Africanized bees. Obviously, bees like those in the SW desert can't be kept in populated areas.
