Good point.
Although the best use for open feeding IMO is fall feeding in the right
circumstances, I seem to recall Dave Green mentioning that offering a
little syrup in the open can wake up a yard and get dozy bees to notice
a nearby crop waiting to be pollinated.
Bees won't always respond to open feed. I recall having to pour a few
ounces onto the cluster of every hive in a yard, once, to get the bees
to go out and empty a full drum that had sat in the yard for a week,
untouched, in late fall. I picked up the empty drum the next day.
