I Just picked up a small (approx. 2 lbs.) feral swarm of Italians
(apparently not AHB due to behavior) from a remote job site (approx. 10
mi.) in the East Bay hills near Sunol, CA. Nuc-boxed them with three deep
frames for now one is an open drone brood trapping frame. This is the
latest I have ever caught a swarm. Based upon the location and the size of
the swarm I believe they came from an oak tree somewhere near the job
site. I'll move them to the yard, place them in one deep, feed them the
next couple months and try and get them through the winter. If that works
and the other two survive as they did last winter then I'll split hives at
the end of Feb.
Anyone else catch swarms lately?
