"Comb Building After the Honeyflow (sic)" (ABJ, 8/75) by Dr. Szabo
reports on a preliminary investigation done at the Beaverlodge Research Station (Alberta) feeding syrup to draw comb in '74. They put 2 deeps foundation w/ 1 brood comb bottom center next to 15 selected colonies, then shook swarmed or blew them into the new hives, removed the originals, and fed unlimited 60/40 syrup (s:w, by #). About 5 days later drawn comb was rotated outward, partially drawn inward, and foundation removed. 12 to 20 days after starting, comb was removed, replaced w/foundation, & extracted. The syrup/honey was thinned to original ratio and fed back. Depending on subsequent colony strength, process was repeated 2 or 3 Xs.
Reported results:
14 colonies used .702 lbs sugar to draw out each of 313.05 deep combs.
Kool, Huh?!
